Part of Lambda’s new NV-Power range of class leading high density and environmentally friendly AC/DC power supplies, the new NV-350 combines high efficiency, low noise and excellent EMC performance in a very compact design. At 6.6W/in³, the new NV-350 offers designers unsurpassed power density for sub 400W modular power supplies making it ideal for applications where both power and space are critical, such as in instrumentation, broadcast, medical, ATE, automation and high-end IT systems.
The new NV-350 is based on Lambda’s patented Multi-Resonant-Topology (MRT), a unique use of synchronous rectifiers in a resonant technology which together with other innovative design features helps the new supply to achieve high efficiencies up to 90%. A large reduction in switching losses and resultant high efficiency means Lambda has not had to compromise size for power and the new 350W PSU comes in a very compact 276 x 95 x 40.6mm enclosure that is 1U rack, 2U card frame and 3U card frame compatible. Weighing in at 0.8kg it is typically 20% lighter than the competition.
The 350W supply is modular, employing configurable planar transformers and offering between one and six outputs with 3.3 to 32V, 2 to 40A ratings. Up to three single or dual output modules can be configured and the transformer on each output module uses a multilayer PCB for primary and a derivation of flexi circuit secondary. This gives a ‘thin’ design and high power throughput for such a small transformer. The construction also allows Lambda to use rapid configuring techniques in the supply’s manufacture.
The NV-350 has no minimum load requirement and features a high power standby of 5V/2A (ATX). Module good, module inhibit signals are supplied as standard, while AC good, outputs good, INH/EN signals can be provided optionally.
Lower heat dissipation, with power components more evenly distributed around the design, means the NV-350 has no need for heatsinks and its open construction allows easy cooling. With a low airflow requirement the new supply uses a smaller, quieter fan. System air-cooled versions are also available.
Due to its patented soft switching MRT design, the NV-350 has inherently low EMI emissions. This is aided by the use of silicon carbide Schottky diodes and the fact that the main power board’s IMS substrate is insulated from earth, resulting in level B compliance and line-to-earth leakage of less than 300µA - a combination unique for this class of product. The NV-350 has EN60601 medical, EN61010 instrumentation and EN60950 approvals.
Customer feedback research has shown that one of the most important things users are looking for in a power supply is ease of installation. In response Lambda has provided the NV-350 with a choice of screw or IEC input connectors, screw output connections carefully designed to avoid cable bunching and a customer-definable termination board option.
