TDK Corporation is pleased to announce that TDK-Lambda UK has been ‘Highly Commended’ this year at the recent Elektra Awards under two categories: Educational Support and Power System Product of the Year. Organised by the market leading electronics magazine, Electronics Weekly, the Elektra Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and companies across Europe, presenting best-practice in key areas including, innovation, sales growth and employee motivation.

During the awards ceremony, which took place last week, judges highlighted the company’s ‘admirable and impressive’ work in promoting STEM education to young people in a range of environments. Alex Knill, Product Performance Manager at TDK-Lambda UK, who attended the event, is involved with promoting many STEM initiatives in local schools, colleges and universities. He estimates that TDK-Lambda directly supports around 300 young people every year. However, if open events, such as careers days, talks and Big Bang were taken into account, this figure would be much higher.

“We have 25 people engaged in STEM and other school activities,” says Knill. “Five of which are official STEM Ambassadors who work closely with a range of organisations, and actively support and encourage young people to develop valuable technical skills throughout their studies to enhance their future career. We are delighted to be ‘Highly Commended’ for the Educational Support Award – this recognition highlights the commitment of our engineering and management staff across all areas of the business.”

Under the Power System Product of the Year award category, TDK-Lambda was also ‘Highly Commended’ for its QM series modular power supply, which was designed and developed at the Ilfracombe facility. Global logistics and supply chain, alongside efficient integrated quality, planning and control systems, enable competitive make-to-order manufacturing of the product in the UK.

“The QM series will power next generation equipment in the fields of medical and home healthcare, test and measurement, broadcast, communications and renewable energy all over the world,” says Martin Coates, Senior Electrical Design Engineer at TDK-Lambda, who also attended the prestigious event. “For the team that were involved with the design and development of the QM series and everyone currently making them, being ‘Highly Commended’ for this award is a great honour – we are delighted.”
