Lambda raises the bar – new Vega 900 delivers 40% more power from standard chassis

Posted : 06 Apr 2004

Lambda’s new 900W Vega gives designers more power: forty percent more power to be precise and in a unit that has exactly the same dimensions as the 650W supply. By increasing Vega’s power density to an industry-beating 0.48W/cm³, the world’s leading manufacturer of configurable power supplies is once again ensuring that designers looking for ever higher levels of power have compact, off-the-shelf solutions to meet their needs in a wide range of medical, industrial control, computing, communications and instrumentation applications.

Comments Martin Southam, Lambda European marketing director: “Vega has been a major success for Lambda. At its introduction, the 650W unit, boasting an unrivalled power density of 0.35W/cm³, set the standard for configurable AC-DC power supplies. Now our design teams have taken the technology another step forward, increasing power density to 0.48W/cm³ to give significantly more output power without any penalty in real-estate.”

The Vega 900 has no minimum load requirement, and one to ten fixed or adjustable outputs that give designers a choice of output voltages from 0.4 to 62V and output current up to 114A. Input voltage is 130-330VDC and 90-264VAC, derating below 180VAC.

The inherent versatility of Vega lies in its high degree of configurability. Output module functions include inhibit, module good, remote sense and parallel. Typical efficiency is 75% at full load and the new supply comes complete with short circuit and over voltage protection.

As well as the wide choice of output modules there are a large number of customer options. The Vega 900 can be specified without a fan for customer cooling. Input connection can be made via a choice of screw, faston or IEC320 terminals. Without fan, the Vega 900 measures 249.3 x 130.0 x 53.3mm.

CE marked in accordance with the LVD, the new supply carries a host of environmental and safety approvals including EN55022 Class B, UL1950, CSA22.2 No.950, EN60950, IEC 60950, EN61010-1, EN60601, UL2601 and UL3101-1. Standard leakage current is 1.5mA and versions with leakage currents down to 50µA are also available for medical applications.

Ramp up
Vega is the fastest growing Lambda product ever and in order to meet customer demand the company has made a further significant investment in new production equipment including ATE and new automatic optical inspection equipment, valued at over £450K.
