Two TDK-Lambda engineers climb up the career ladder

Posted : 25 Aug 2011

Local power supply manufacturer TDK-Lambda UK, a group company of the TDK Corporation, is delighted to announce its latest success story in the names of Daniel Lawson and Mathew Chinn. Both have gained honours degrees – Lawson in Electronics Engineering through Portsmouth University, and Chinn in Electro-Mechanical Design & Manufacture from the University of Plymouth.

Lawson joined TDK-Lambda nine years ago as an Assembly Operator and, after his first year, was offered an apprenticeship through Group Training and Development (GTD). “I have really enjoyed studying over the years,” comments Lawson, “but there is no doubt that it has been tough, especially finding the time to work full-time and study.” All this work has reaped its rewards, however, and Lawson’s career has advanced to Electronics Technician (2004), Junior Engineer (2008) and more recently a Design Engineer (2009).

Chinn, on the other hand, joined TDK-Lambda as a Trainee Electronics Technician in 2005. He immediately embarked upon a two-year HNC course in Electronics Engineering. Now a Junior Design Engineer, Chinn is passing on his knowledge and experience by assisting in the training of new starters in the DVT Lab, to familiarise them with TDK-Lambda’s products and in-house test procedures. “Throughout my studies TDK-Lambda has supported me – both professionally and financially,” says Chinn. “TDK-Lambda gave me study time while preparing for exams. And, with lots of colleagues from different backgrounds, I have been able to call on a helping hand to explain some of the more complex subject matter.”

A strong believer in the value of apprenticeships and training, Phil Scotcher, General Manager of TDK-Lambda UK, comments: “Our apprenticeship and trainee programmes are two of the major pillars of our training and development process, providing opportunities to employees who might otherwise miss out on career progression. Daniel and Mathew’s progress are terrific examples of just how far up the ladder a person, with drive and determination, can climb.”
