On a recent visit to Bristol, The Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP met with several early stage technology companies who are tenants of the Bristol & Bath Science Park.
The Business Minister spoke to Andrew Skinner, Chief Technology Officer at TDK-Lambda EMEA, who leads a team of six newly-recruited, experienced power design engineers at the company’s EMEA Advanced Technology Centre (ATC), which is based at the park. TDK-Lambda’s decision for additional investment in R&D was to accelerate its current and planned power supply technology developments and has successfully filed two new patents.
During their discussions Andrew Skinner emphasised the important role the new Patent Box legislation is playing to encourage innovation by providing an incentive for companies. He also explained to the Business Minister how companies such as TDK-Lambda, which is managed globally, are being effectively ruled out of benefitting from EPSRC funding while, at the same time, global competition for recruiting experienced engineers to the UK is growing.
