This year's Big Bang South West was the largest interactive exhibition to take place at the University of Exeter Streatham campus. Students, young people and some of the most dynamic employers in the country converged in the name Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
The Education Business Partnership – South West (EBP-SW), which organises the event, heralded it a major success. More than 90 judges assessed over 150 student projects for thirty highly coveted prizes, with 80 local, national and international organisations sharing their skills and enthusiasm with the students. The event also attracted a record-breaking 1,050 young people to attend the science, physics and chemistry ‘Mega Class’.
The National Science + Engineering Competition (NECC) nominated 10 project teams to go through to the national finals of The Big Bang Fair in London in March 2014. These included the bench top wind tunnel (Blundell's School, Devon who worked with TDK-Lambda UK).
Jenny Rudge, Chief Executive, Careers South West said: “Each year at The Big Bang South West we are amazed at the scales and ambition of the student projects and overwhelmed by the level of interest and enthusiasm our young people have for science, technology, engineering and maths. Breaking the UK Record for a Mega Class is a superb achievement and just goes to show the level of interest in the subjects that shape our world. Thank you also to all that took part and congratulations to all those prize-winners too!”
About The Big Bang
The Big Bang Near You events take place across the UK to inspire young people about the science, technology, engineering and maths all around them.
The National Science & Engineering Competition is coordinated by the British Science Association in partnership with Young Engineers and The Big Bang. Principally funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and open to students aged 11-18 across the UK, the Competition aims to raise the profile of science and engineering in the UK.
The Fairs are part of The Big Bang Programme, a national programme which celebrates and raises the profile of young people’s achievement in science and engineering and encourages more young people to take part in science, technology, engineering and maths initiatives.
The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair is the programme’s national flagship event, which hosts the finals of the prestigious National Science & Engineering Competition and is a key part of National Science and Engineering Week.
