Tania Jeffery of TDK-Lambda UK, the leading power supply manufacturer, has won the coveted ‘Trainee of the Year’ award at this year’s North Devon Manufacturing Association (NDMA) Awards. The award was in recognition of the dedication and hard work Tania has put into improving her skills and education levels throughout 2008, overcoming some major shortfalls in her formal education.

“Tania transferred to our Design Verification Testing (DVT) from the production area early last year,” explains Jane Worley, TDK-Lambda’s Training Officer. “Her practical ability to build and rework our products was fantastic and, in order to be able to undertake the other work done in DVT, she needed to gain her National Certificate (NC) in Electronic Engineering.”

However, before embarking on the course, Tania needed to overcome some major stumbling blocks – GCSE Mathematics was one of the pre-requisite qualifications for the course and this was quite a challenge for her to face.

“I’m truly thrilled at receiving this award – winning it means a lot to me,” says Tania. “My personal objective was to gain a sufficient qualification in maths, to be able to join the September 08 National Certificate course at North Devon College. TDK-Lambda has supported me throughout my career and the modern facilities at the new in-house Skills Centre really helped; I also enrolled in a Skills For Life programme at Pathfinder.”

“Tania studied in her own time in order to gain the qualifications she needed before the course commenced,” comments Worley. “In the few months she had, Tania managed to bring both her numeracy and literacy skills up to the required standard, so much so that she now helps the younger class members with their maths and is highly praised by her tutors at the college.”

Impressed by Tania’s achievements Phil Scotcher, General Manager of TDK-Lambda UK (Configurable Products), comments: “I am pleased to say that Tania was awarded the NDMA Trainee of The Year. I wish her ongoing success in her career with TDK-Lambda and look forward to hearing about her next triumph.”

“Tania not only took on the pressures of a new role but upskilled herself within a very short space of time,” concludes Worley. “She not only met but exceeded our expectations of her.”
